you could first download the standart installer because if you do not install msdn you only have to download 50-100mb i think.

but msdn is great, i really recommend the IMG download (you also do not have to register with the IMG download then)

if you would live in germany i could send you a dvd image :o

AndyCR, i believe you are talking about compiling irrlicht itself right (irrlicht.dll)?
wondering if it works "out-of-the-box" with the pre-compiled dll that comes in the irrlicht sdk download (i dont compile irrlicht myself because i can never get it to work)

afraid it does not, you have to compile irrlicht.dll from scratch for it to work, but ill upload the compiled .dll and .lib if you want them.

when compiling the dll, do you need the debug versions of DX (like dx3dx9d.dll) as you do with Dev C++?

im just trying to stay away from using them because i like the ability to give someone app.exe and irrlicht.dll and having it work (as they prolly have dx installed already lol)

if it doesnt use the debug versions dont worry about uploading it for me, its about time i learn to compile it myself anyway :)

i honestly dont know, i believe it depends if your compiling for debug or release, could be wrong.

Well, I'll be... Someone finally "turned on the light" in Redmond and figured out that if you want folks to develop for your platform, ya gotta give away some tools... 8)

Considering what MS makes on licensing their OS versions and "other software" they can afford to give away some compilers and code generation tools IMHO. (Our MS licensing costs for an ERP project I'm co-ordinating is over 60K $$$!)

BTW, do get the CD images if you can and burn them to disk. You'll be happy you did later if you have to wipe and reload your box...

@dhenton9000 - there's very detailed instructions on the download page for the image on getting it to disk. I believe the tools to use are free as well.

yes the tools are free.
yes you have to recompile irrlicht.
no, you can also use the normal directx libraries and thus the debug dlls are not needed. hey its microsoft, so why should directx not work right with it :) ?
the only dll you need is Irrlicht.dll

after i recompiled irrlicht everything worked great, before, i always got dllexport errors.

sorry to ask this guys, but which software did you use to burn the img file? I thought Nero had built-in support for them but it doesn't. I also googled about it and all I got was a bunch of shareware utils full of spyware and crap!!!

GFX: I also read you extracted the img files and then burned them all onto a DVD. Which tool, or how did you extract them? Are they like iso files that you can just open with Winrar or something?

help!

yeah the img files can be openned by winrar, however winrar cant save to iso format (or i just dont know how)

i used the program that was on the microsoft page (under manual install) to open the img file, then just saved it back as an iso file. then used alcohol to burn them

Hi all!

Just downloading too. Really curious about it... since I couldn't afford these tools until now, haha ;)

@afecelis: on their site ms says that an app called "isobuster" could unpack the image for you.
you'll find it here: http://www.smart-projects.net/recover.htm
it's not free though :(

The img files are actually iso images. No need to convert them to anything. If you are too lazy to burn them on CD (of course it is still a good idea for backup) you can just use the free daemon tools http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/downloa ... ry&catid=5 to open the image as a virtual cd drive.

i used daemontools to copy the data from the IMG files. then i made a folder called Visual Studio 2005 Express with subfolders (Visual C++ 2005 Express/etc...) and copied the data from the images into the subfolders. then just burn the visual studio 2005 express folder on cd like any other data-cd and youre done :)
