give me some suggestions
see I am pretty good with blender, with animation and modelling, I have always wanted to make a game though... A good cartoony game. Like ratchet and clank, or something to that sort. Crash Bandicoot.
Don't think of me as those guys that post projects and never do them, thats why i didn't post in the projects announcements, I'm uncertain if I'm going to do this, But I had an idea that I could make an little alien, that crashes on earth, and is running from government operatives, and little gov. scout robots and such. I was thinking of using blenders animation functions to make small cinematics that I could play within the game. Just a basic game, no real port except to get away from the gov. agents and kill all the small robots, he won't have a no guns, he won't have any arms. just a small body, tiny legs, and eye that sticks off his head, and big bottom lip. hah. But I was wondering if there any suggestions you might have to this idea.
All in all, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be using Irrlicht, DeleD with lightmaps, and blender.
-deled for lightmapped levels
-blender for props and character models, and small cinematics here and there.
-irrlicht for game engine
-newton for physics
-fmod for sound fx and music
and maybe some things from SDL if its possible to make a clean transition from SDL to irrlicht.
because I noticed irrlicht doesn't show basic images with very good quality. maybe SDL could be an alternative way to show menu's and such...
(I'm not a very good programmer, but I know the basics, although I will probably have trouble with newton.)
also, does irrlicht allow playing AVI's?
that is all...

irrlicht doesn't play avis directly, but the wiki irrforge.org has code to do the job. Look in the projects section for Emil_halim's magic2D library, which does 2D images (including avis) like crazy.
I'm a big rachet and clank fan myself, and everything you've mentioned is doable in Irrlicht.
As for finishing, who knows? I find that planning to make a game helps to shape what you learn as it gives you direction. If you get to the end, so much the better.
Have you switched to blender 2.4?

Do a search of this forum. There is a mod here to make 3d sound in audiere.Anonymous wrote:do you know if it possible to have 3d sound with audiere, so the sound will fade up when I go toward the object making sound and then fade out when I leave it...?
because fmod was not working right with my compiler, and I want to use something else anyway...
If it exists in the real world, it can be created in 3d
Sys specs:

grrr. phpbbs search function sucks.

Here are a couple of others, probably repeats of MikeR's

openal
there's also openal. I made a openal scenenode a while ago, you can get it at http://fmorg.sf.net
there is a link there to a demo of it, or better yet check out the CVS version, which is much more up-to-date with bugfixes and stuff....

My irrlicht-based projects have gone underground for now, but if you want, check out my webcomic instead! http://brokenboomerang.net

I think I know what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna use disanti's 3d sound function for audiere, only because, I'm not a very good programmer so audiere is better for me to understand... And its not that important for the crash bandicoot type game I'm creating. Also I'm gonna have to work with newton physics, unless anyone has any suggestions for a better and much easier physics engine then let me know. I'm using Ogg Vorbis format for the audio (fx,music) and blender for the modeller, .x for the characters and props, and .x for the levels. unless there any suggestions if I should .x for levels or not. Although I do want them lightmapped so any suggestions for that... Possibly mim? And explain how I would go about lightmapping my level. Also I'm using mingw gcc compiler, and irrlicht engine... gimp for textures... codeblocks for IDE... magic2d for displaying images at good quality in irrlicht.
Thats about it. Any critiques or suggestions for my decisions on what I'm using for development. I'm trying to make this as painless, fast, and easy as possible. With the best of free softwares has to offer.
Right now I'm trying to figure out how I would organize a big game like this.
whew...! Big dreams... tsk tsk... big dreams....
anyways...
cheers... Also thanks for your help with the stuff above...

well, I guess the free release of visual c++ express totally shattered me from using mingw. I'll use express.
so.... heres the downlow, tell me what you think about the development tool decisions.
-levels with lighting - blender; OCT lightmapped files
-character and props models - blender; .3ds format
-game physics - newton game dynamics
-audo - audiere; with some fake 3d sound functions built over-the-top of audiere
-magic2d library for images
-crazy eddies GUI(maybe) for gui stuff...
I can't really give the project a date of release, because mainly... I have only started on concept art, and design concepts. but If I had to guess, it will probably take 3 months for an appropiate tech demo
since the latest release of express with no licensing attatchment... Ill probably release the playable demo, attatch a $30 price tag on it, and see what I accumulate, If It gets big and people enjoy it, I might fiddle with raknet, and create a online game war.
I don't really think these are big dreams. The game itself won't be that complecated, nor extreme. So I actually think this could be a go.
I myself haven't really seen a decent game create by Irrlicht... No offense to any irrlicht developers - I myself haven't released anything to a techdemo, but I have been browsing these forums on the down low and compiling samples and understanding basic framework of the engine and games thereselves. I would like to offer to this community a great symbol of what irrlicht can give. Or maybe I'm talking out of my rear.
Its just that If I don't complete a game, it is going to be bothering my whole life, and I'm not gonna be able to move onto anything else. HA!
Anyways,
cheers.
