In my game i have the camera up and out of the level, looking down on the player. A 3/4 view.
is there anyway of having the outline of the player shown when it moves behind a wall? or any other similar effect?

instead of turning back-face culling off, you could have it draw backfaces with 50% transparency
this functionality is not currently built into the engine, but you could add it.

but wouldn't that just draw the backface at 50% transparency, then the frontface completely solid over the top?

geometry is only either back or front. its in relation to the camera.
anything that did have a front face would be drawn in full however, so yes, this isnt the best option, though it may still be viable
