Suggestion for a more concise forum...

Post by lug »

Hi,

I've been browsing the forum for some time now. It seems pretty chaotic to find information. Is there any chance of adding sub-forums underneath the primary forum?

For excample, under the topic: "FAQs, Howtos, and tool lists" you could sub-divide this into splinter forums like:

camera tutorials
sound tutorials
physics tutorials
programming tools (IDE, compilers, text editors, etc.)
graphic content tools (3d modelling, texture editor, 3d paint, etc.)
audio tools (wav editor, music synthesizer, etc.)

These are merely suggestions. This would make finding information a whole lot easier. It allows one to "browse" for information in a topic that one is interested in instead of having to do tons and tons of searches (which I believe slows down the server since the search engine goes through the whole forum content looking for your search terms).

At any rate, please do consider.

The version of phpBB the board is using doesn't support sub-forums without mods. Those features will be released with phpBB 3. I agree though, subforums and such would takesome of the work off finding info.

Thanks, Conquistador. I didn't know that. Do you know of any plans to upgrade the board to v3?

Well, I'm not a mod, so I can't tell you anything about an update, but phpBB 3 hasn't even entered beta testing yet, so unless there's a modification out there, you could be waiting a whille.

AGREED!

It's really hard to find anything with the IMHO 'useless' Search-Function...

I hope that the Mods. are hearing our 'prayers' for better forums...

Well once the forums can handle that I'm sure that's one of the first things we will do!

Maybe not the subforum thing yet but the search can be repaired I guess ? or is the ALL search intentionally working like the ANY search ?

It is really a crime having to dig through all the useless search results....

i agree to that, this is the point why some question here were asked about 20 times (no joke), you can spend days on this board answering the same questions again and again

Having search fixed would be nice. As others have already mentioned, the search features for this forum are next to worthless (no ALL WORDS filter, even though the search interface leads you to believe there is one).

There is a ton of great info hidden in these forums that it takes me hours to find when it should take seconds.

phpBB is dead.
There are converters on the net to port a phpBB board over to MyBB, the new and still being developed Open Source forum....

Wait, so a project is dead when they don't have a release for a while? Even when they're actively working on the next one?

No wonder so many people get uppity about Irrlicht being 'dead'. ;)

Many projects are killed and revived that way everyday. In the end it's all the product of rumors just because the project is not being developed as fast as users would want to.

I don't care if phpbb is dead or what forum software this forum uses, I just wish there were a way to actually do a meaningful search on it, but as of now there isn't.
