What does everybody think? Check here if you've never heard of MUGEN before:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.G.E.N

It's basically a highly, customizable 2D fighting game engine that captures the look and feel of capcom and snk series of 2D fighting games. I know there are several open source project devoted to MUGEN, but I want to make one using irrlicht engine.

There are like a zillion characters, stage backgrounds, and sound made for MUGEN by the fan community. It would be awesome to support all of these fan-made stuff in irrMugen. Then extend it to support 3D fighters. Then add in network play and we're golden!

Whopee!!! Now I just need to get started... :)

specially interesting if it'd mean no coding for us artist, so one could play with it and custom 3d models and anims(made form scratch), allowing a solo-making or even machinima-intro thingie...

It'd be interesting.

Specially as then the artist can work and see stuff with no need of getting into a new compromise of a project, and test and do stuff otherwise they (we) don't do, for time, and as we're usuallly after the $ ;)
But is an stuff quite interesting for an artist.

But I wouldn't think it's easy to code ;)

pd: oh, it'd be interesting also if for pixel art , 2d, too.
Finally making games again!

Did you notice that it said that MUGEN is NOT LEGAL since 2003? That wouldn't be good for Irrlicht.

any current distribution of MUGEN has not been authorized by Elecbyte and is therefore technically illegal, although Elecbyte has never taken any legal action

What did you guys think I was stating? I'm not good at asm so disassembling the mugen code would be useless to someone like me. Although there have been attempts at it by others using boomerang decompiler. I tried it out of curiousity. The code looked horrible (from my perspective of course; it may deemed readable by others).

No, what Anaconda said is right. None of the original code from mugen will be used. Now the backward compatibility of the various file format that mugen used may be in question. But I plan for irrMugen to have it's own format for animation, sound, etc. in addition to supporting the original mugen format. It's like irrlicht supporting 3ds format. There's no legal issue in irrlicht able to load 3ds format.

There's nothing to show yet (well, at least of interest). It's more involved then I originally thought (funny how you think something is easy until you actually start development then find out the scope is 10x bigger than you expected...that happens to me alot...). When it's ready for public eye, I'll start a post in the project announcement forum.
