DirectX 10 GPU's huge power demand

Post by jam »

Link
ACCORDING TO PC WATCH, the next round of GPUs are going to be really smoking, not because they are fast, but because they suck power like it is going out of style.

If you read the article (here and translated here), you will see the damage that will be done to the world's petroleum reserves.

The short story is this, G80 form Nvidia is looking to suck down 175W on a 90nm process, probably a bit less on 80nm. R600 from ATI is looking to take about 200W in 80nm, and less if they pull off a shrink to 65nm.

Either way, this is simply too much. The current 100+W is borderline insane, and adding half again to it is just silly, speed is OK, but I think we have just passed the point of being ludicrous. When you are at more than twice the power of the CPU, it is time to hit yourself on the head with the same high velocity cluestick that AMD and Intel have already experienced

Time to invest in a second PSU.

Murder Microsoft! It is all their fault...

Sriously, the world has gone mad. I'm switching to linux.
I have recently discovered that both the Flu and my Algebra teacher have exact the same effect on my health: it quickly degrades.

I've always known that I'll have to buy a lot of fire extinguishers in the future ...

I'm rather aware how they're going to freeze stuff than how much energy they'll take but it doesn't sound good.

Or maybe they will sell some atomic cells in nearest future.

Don't bother me, I've been expecting this, is why I bought a 620W power supply!

What brand of PSU did you buy?

It's an OCZ.

Here's link to it, got it from newegg.com -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817104155

Right now, it's 99.99 with a $20 rebate. I paid $94.99 with no rebate for it a couple months ago. Best investment in my PC, hands down.

AWESOME, power supply.

It has tight wraps on the wires, no power wires dangling all over the place.
Also, it has 2 power connectors for directly connecting to graphics card( the 3x2 connectors ).
And the greatest thing is it has connectors for the cables on the PSU, so if you don't need cables, you just don't plug them in, which saves you having to tuck extra wiring and connectors somewhere.
