What do you think about next generation game?
The Irrlicht is a good engine bat look as HL1! The next generation game have expense usage of shader and other effect as Bloom and HDR that require special feature. For example the Bloom effect require to store a separate Texture with light emettivity. This is not compatibly con the Irrlicht architecture! In short, if we use OpenGl 1.0 and DirectX <9 we have laminated power!
In the future there's free sdk for PS3 and Xbox 360 that are more powerful of a standard computer!

that anyway, for making a better than hl2 game you need a big nice solid army of graphic artist, with several international titles in their belts, count on at least 30 guys on it... besides a teams of programmes for AI, and all other coding departments of a AAA game of today.
Anyway, the road of an indy engine, where actually are what... 3 persons or 4 coding the main thing... and almost to zero artist help...they already did a quite advanced engine..parallax mapping and many othe advanced stuff is there...
And also, have been a gfx guy for several comercial games, and man, no matter the technology that much...good games are lacking today...besides, bad modelers pop everywhere in the companies, I keep seing uber hi res models with basic anatomy errors, among other things.
I don't think is better art, nor even better game a game for having bloom.Which if u ask me, is over used today...reality is not that "bloomy" ..not at least once you're fully awaken in the morning...XD
HDR...ya.Nice. But u dont know what can be done even with a no lighting engine..

Anyway, shaders seem easy to add, and there was some effort here already

Well all that stuff is easy to implement with a bit of effort and more importantly... reading.

2-HDR(fake- i use another fixed pt texture to provide a wider range rather than using a floating point one)
3-prallax mapping on levels with lightmaps
4-terrain splatter
5-Focal blur and depth of field
Rember reaslism isnt always good sometimes interactive art/art direction looks allot better, games should be creative and transport us to diffrent worlds rather than immitating our own.

most of the things you describe, a lot of the high class looks of games today, are done using shaders, of which a lot of the people (other than omaremad) are not using
i cant really do any shader work myself until I get a new video card (mine died, im stuck on a slow integrated ATI x200 on my motherboard), which I cant replace until like November. i dunno who else is stuck on hardware thats not supportive, but im sure there are others on here
