abandonware ok?

Post by grunt »

I downloaded a game off of abandonia. If it is classified as abandonware and is free to download. That means I can use its graphics correct, as the company essentialy released their copyright on it?

Not necessarily. Many games are illegally available as abandonware. You need to check any licenses that may be issued with the download. If there are none stating what license the game is downloadable under, there's a good chance it's illegal.

I think I'd be annoyed if someone was stealing media from my abandoned game, even if it was free for all to play!

Well, abandonware is generally illegal to download or use, with few exceptions (Ultima IV, for example), so ripping from them is also illegal. Personally, if a game I made and sold 10 years ago was on abandonware sites today, I wouldn't mind. However, many developers do not feel this way, so I would avoid abandonware altogether.

Uhh.. Abandonware is when someone quits making a game before finishing it, it's mostly not illegal to download.

I'd say it's best to ask the creator first if he doesn't mind, or else a lot of people might complain that you stole their gfx.

no, the term abandonware is generally applied to software that is no longer able to be purchased (old stuff, like old DOS games, which dont have a distributor anymore). theyre still illegal to distribute, unless license has been changed by the original copyright holder
