Just made a nice find: www.earthsculptor.com. Might come in handy. Lots of features, but not open sourced (yet?).

Great tool! I am using it to create .MAP files which I then convert to Ogre Mesh with MapToMesh(availble at sourceforge). Thanks for posting this link!
Yep, because it never happened to me.
I had it running under XP and Win2K and did not experience a single crash no matter how much i "tortured" it.
I guess your machine suffers the so-called "Battle of undetected trojans syndrome". Clean or better reinstall. Use another OS (BSD, Linux, OSX) or a virtual machine (VMware) for Internet access. That will remedy the problem permanently. Using the VM approach saves you from rebooting for internet access, but you need a fair amount of RAM, depending on the used OS'ses. And if you want to be a nice guy don't complain about windoze too much...sic! Use it for its predestined purpose: a huge and ultrafat gameloader.
