level moulins project

Post by jvcarch »

Hi ,
I would like to introduce our project : Level Moulins
We are an architect office located in Lille (France).

Level Moulins is our research project ;
The concept is to consider city as a palimpsest. So, the idea is to show in 3d real time the multiple time layers that compose the city, and let visitors to navigate freely inside. Vanished, actual and future planned buildings are merged together to build intemporal scenes.

Our aim is to design an interactiv tool able to visualize large urban areas in 3D real time. The first tests has been developped by using irrlicht engine;

Futher infos are availabe at this url :
(sorry full text in french, english version coming soon)

I'm incredibly surprised at the amount of detail in textures (and models considering I don't know how accurate it is)

why such detail in an architectural product?

Honestly I was expecting something more like wireframe or solid colors.

this has an amazing amount of detail considering its application.

I'm curious what besides city planning and customer conceptualization would this product be used for?

If the application is practical why do you refer to it as a research project considering this type of work has taken many forms in the short life of 3rd dimensional design.

I would just like to point out that this is not ground breaking material from my understanding of this type of application.

However it would appear to be a major contendor to the market for such an application.

To sum it up... nice work. 8)

thanks for the comments
The screenshots show the first step of the project. the aim was to built 3d representation of a real district in Lille.

The process:
1)to take photos of the facades in the street.
2)process this huge amount of pictures to produce decent textures
3)build a 3d model and then intregrate the result in irrlicht.

The current version covers about 40 hectares and has been exhibited in Lille. Users (most of the time inhabitants of the modelized district) navigate inside buildings and also in private backyards, so they can discover what is not allowed to see in the real life.

As i wrote in the first thread, the idea is to mix several time in the same 3d scene (old demolished, actual and future planned buildings). So, people will navigate in an intemporal city. each layer will be modelized by using different types of textures and effect (vanished buildings will look like ghosts,fututue ones in wireframe mode, etc..)
