PZ3 format - can/will Irrlicht support it natively?

Post by Nodtveidt »

I'm not too familiar with the intricate details of the pz3 format but it's obviously very, very popular. Is there any hope for pz3 support in Irrlicht, either officially or through some kind of user-submitted extension? I searched the forum and only found one reference to pz3, and it was buried somewhere in a 19 page thread...wotsit has no information on the format either but there are pz3 plugins for a number of applications out there (such as Cinema4D) so there's got to be something somewhere. Anyone have any leads?

It looks like those files are created by the Curious Labs Poser program to save entire Poser "scenes". I can't find much info on the actual file layout other than it is a text file.

As for adding it to Irrlicht, I'll leave that to someone more knowledgable than I.

Oh sheesh, I never even bothered to see if it was a textfile or not...that would explain its huge size and excellent compression ratio when zipped or rared. Very complex file though...ouch. Really dependant on obj files it seems...I looked into the files the pz3 was asking for and they're definately wavefront standard so that makes life a heck of a lot easier. Thanks for the tip! Although now I feel like kind of a moron...oh well. :D

I've been using Poser 4 to design the level geometry for an FPS I've been working on in Irrlicht. Since Irrlicht doesn't natively support pz3, I export the geometry to an obj file. Unfortunately, Poser 4's obj export is incomplete when it comes to handling materials, and the obj only contains a single "Preview" mtl, with a terribly incomplete mtl file to go along with it. I'm hoping to write a small tool to convert pz3 files to *proper* obj files if a free one doesn't already exist (I've never found one aside from what you can get in some other modellers, but I don't have the cash to shell out right now...).
