to compile a map in Quark you need a bsp compiler like Q3map2. Q3map2 used to be a standalone download but it's now part of Gtkradiant. There are other free attempts of a bsp compiler but not very succesful.

I'd suggest you download Gtkradiant to build your maps and follow this tutorial on how to do maps without having Quake 3 installed:
http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=12100

Another option would be to map your stuff in Quark and use the Q3map2build frontend to compile into bsp. Q3map2build is also included in the "tools" folder of the tutorial download.
