Making my webserver available for hosting Irrlicht downloads

Post by bgsteffens »

Hello everyone :)

I'm just getting started with Irrlicht and as I'm sure I will soon have many questions for you all, but won't have the experience yet to give back to the community by writing patches or answering others' questions, I thought I'd extend an invitation. Anyone that needs a place for long-term storage of something Irrlicht-related that you can link off as download link on the forums can email me at brian@cybenstudios.com. I have more storage space and bandwidth than I need on a very reliable webhost and am willing to share it with the Irrlicht community :) Just email me with what you want hosted and I'll put it up (as long as it's not like 500 mb haha).

Thanks for a great graphics engine =]

An excellent offer. Definitely something that's needed - I've lost count of the forum links that I've clicked on that have become dead.

So, what's the procedure if we have Irrlicht files that we'd like you to host? For example, I'd like to make compiled versions of my Code Snippets available so people can see what they do.

Importantly - and please don't take this the wrong way - what's to say your hosting won't be dead in six months, or a year, or two? :?:

(The dead links are frustrating, aren't they? ;) )

Well, for now, however you want to get the file(s) is fine (email, msn, etc). I'm thinking about setting up an Irrlicht ftp account, so that's sort of where it's headed.

And about the webserver going down.. I've got it prepaid for way too long :D Something like a yearish? I have no intention of changing hosts, but if i did, I'd keep the domain names I own of course and transfer everything over. So externally there would be no difference :D

An ftp area would be a good idea. Sending stuff by email can be a pain - the BinHex encoding adds around 50%.

I currently have at least four demos I'd like to make available (mostly stuff I've posted to Code Snippets):
1. Newton/Irrlicht physics demo - load a Quake3 map and throw boxes around.
2. Addition of reflective water to the standard PerPixelLighting demo.
3. Conversion of DeusXL's .NET water demo to C++.
4. Newton buoyancy (throwable stuff that will float if it lands in water).

If you'd like to PM the ftp url I'll put the demos together over the weekend and upload them. 8)
