From CGI to gamedev

Post by Thirt33n »

Hello everyone, I'm new here.

For a long time now I'm doing 3d with maya, and i thought that it would be nice to try game development. I have some exp in programing, but in pascal not c++ (i'v heard they are similar), and i have lots of exp in 3D, Maya in particular.

Now i know that max is considered the best soft for games, but that would mean that i have to start from scratch. Is it really worth it or should i continue with maya. What are Max's advantages over maya in game modeling?

Thx.

P.s: not to be confused with Thirt33n_Yellow or thirt33n on Myspace, and i have nothing to do with the movie...I am THE thirt33n (as seen on highend3d.com)

I'd say the main reason to learn Max additionally would be if you want a job for a company which is using Max. Besides that there is not much of a reason to switch. I have met professional gameartists which liked Maya more and some who prefered 3D-Max. So if you know Maya already and if you like it, then just stay with it :-)

As for coding: You can certainly try to learn coding as well as doing graphics, but a lot of projects are missing good artists. That means that a good modeler can get into gamedev as easy as a good programmer. It really depends on what you like to do more. I think it's hard to be really good in both jobs, but on the other hand it's rather useful to know something about the other side.
