Irrlicht 1.3 Tutorials
Irrlicht 1.3 Tutorials
hello,
are there any tutorials or demos of the new functions of irrlicht 1.3 ?
Would be great to see what is possible with the new version.
Maybe the wiki would be a good place to make some links to new
tutorials.

not a whole lot else is different.
you can save gui with saveGUI("gui.xml");
and load with loadGUI("gui.xml");
there have been other changes but most won't know it wasn't there already.
lots of fixes not so many additions this time around gui is getting a lot better and I'm working on a irrlicht tutorial site.

1.3
1.3 is a solid release, no doubt, but i think apart from the xml gui thing, which is pretty awesome, some more of the exciting stuff we have been glimpsing on the forums here is still in the pipeline. like the new animation system, multithreading, DX10, all of which i believe are in the plans, but not there yet. i think many of the mountain of small fixes in 1.3 may have been in preparation for that.
niko said on his blog he had been busy lately, but i think we'll see some more big stuff in 1.4; in any case im hoping so, that would be pretty cool.

My irrlicht-based projects have gone underground for now, but if you want, check out my webcomic instead! http://brokenboomerang.net

i wasn't suggesting that they drop dx9 or 8 support, or even opengl, simply that sometime in the future it would be cool to support dx10 also. honestly i still don't understand why there is so much hostility towards dx10 and vista. nobody got this upset when they released dx9, or when XP came out, seriously, WTF??

Well then, which are the new functions in vista? Honestly, i don't think they made some major improvement, did they?buhatkj wrote:i wasn't suggesting that they drop dx9 or 8 support, or even opengl, simply that sometime in the future it would be cool to support dx10 also. honestly i still don't understand why there is so much hostility towards dx10 and vista. nobody got this upset when they released dx9, or when XP came out, seriously, WTF??
I'm permanently moving into the *nix world when xp becomes obsolete, and i think that a lot of people will join me when that happens.
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

That's a common enough delusion.Luben wrote:I'm permanently moving into the *nix world when xp becomes obsolete, and i think that a lot of people will join me when that happens.
I've nothing against Vista or DX10, but supporting DX10 eye candy when Irrlicht still sends vertex data every frame is much like trying to send HDTV by smoke signal.
Please upload candidate patches to the tracker.

Yeah, I agree here. Unix/Linux atleast in my opinion is not going to overtake M$ anytime soon and the software is still mostly for windows. I don't use Linux and have nothing against it, but I don't see it truly gaining power in the world of OS's due to software. It's a bad cycle. No software means no users(or few in this case). No users means people don't take time to make software for it since it is a lower user-base. That's why windows still dominates so easily. The key is in the sofware and games as well.rogerborg wrote:That's a common enough delusion.Luben wrote:I'm permanently moving into the *nix world when xp becomes obsolete, and i think that a lot of people will join me when that happens.

As far as DX10 support in Irrlicht, I think their are other things to worry about, and agree with this as well. Internals of the engine need fixed up and optimized before going for DX10, though sometime in the future, there is nothing wrong with upgrading. I can't use DX10 since my vid card is an NVidia 7600 GO with Windows Vista on my laptop. I don't think anything is wrong with Vista except that it is probably too hyped up and isn't anything all that special. The Aeroglass display thingy isn't really useful to me. I belive the security is the same as an updated WinXP with SP2 and all updates, so that isn't an issue either. The main reason I got it is just because it came with this laptop and if it had come with XP and SP2, I would've been happy with that.
Aha, but when i change it's because i'll want a os that doesn't require as much hardware as oblivion does. And it doesn't tell me when what i want to search for, how my desktop should look like, what websites i want to visit, etc... =)kburkhart84 wrote: Yeah, I agree here. Glad you like the GUI serialization stuff.. It's a start but Irrlicht's GUI still has a long way to go!
Linux will overtake Windows as soon as PCs start coming bundled with Linux. Most people don't care what operating system they use, so long as they can surf the web and send emails.
Technical people and gamers are exceptions rather than the rule. If I removed XP from my parents computer, installed linux and left a shortcut to Firefox and OpenOffice on the desktop I doubt they'd even notice the difference.

Ummmm, Dell's been offering both Suse Linux and RedHat bundled with PCs for over 4 years now. I wouldn't exactly call this an "overtaking" of Windows. Granted though, I believe Dell only supports Linux on it's servers, which you pay out the ass for, for support, and not to mention, the majority of people buying their servers, are technical and have a clue about Linux/computers so the support isn't that bad. Just think of all the manpower and money required for a PC sales company just to support video drivers on Linux!!!!bitplane wrote:Linux will overtake Windows as soon as PCs start coming bundled with Linux. And if my mom installed Linux, or any of my friends/family that aren't "technical people and gamers", hell even the "gamers" for that matter, I'd change all my phone numbers and screen all my calls and emails, because all they'd do is call me and ask me for help( that already do with Windows, and it's a 1000000% easier to use and manage than Linux ).

After I installed Ubuntu to my mother-in-law and to my sister the amount of support requests dropped dramatically. No more trojans (no need to explain over and over again that opening emails from someone you don't know WILL cause troubles even if he/she loves you or wants to give you valuable information about stock markets) and if they need something I just do it remotely with SSH (no more explaining things in phone).Spintz wrote:And if my mom installed Linux, or any of my friends/family that aren't "technical people and gamers", hell even the "gamers" for that matter, I'd change all my phone numbers and screen all my calls and emails, because all they'd do is call me and ask me for help( that already do with Windows, and it's a 1000000% easier to use and manage than Linux ).
Wlans, digicams etc. works perfectly so why to use Windows? Linux is a perfect solution for a non-gamer.
Each experience will be different. Once you tell me you've installed any distro of Linux on thousands of machines and had no problems getting the basics up and running, with all kinds of different hardware, you're argument is not valid, IMO. For instance, there is better support for older hardware, but you get anything state of the art, and it's a nitemare. The first time you tell someone they have to install kernel source, recompile the library and do all kinds of modprobe/insmod commands and the list goes on and on, they'll say, ummmm, can't I just click setup.exe???anylo wrote:After I installed Ubuntu to my mother-in-law and to my sister the amount of support requests dropped dramatically. But to each their own, the current market share shows which OS's are more viable to the mainstream public.
