does the *nix distribution flavor matter that much?

typically among *nix the type doesnt matter so much as what libraries/kernal/etc are installed. and neither "linux" or "freeBSD" gives a definate picture for most of that.

Yes ofcourse, 90% are lame cattle mixe with lazi developers :P and the other are serious developers that use serious development environments (in my case I need it not for game but for simulator that will never run on such unstable and resource consuming platform as windoze :) ).

I think windows bashing has become a bit of a past time, sometimes rightly, but I don't think calling gamers who play their games for the easiest to use platform lazy on a PC, or call developers who prefer Windows to Linux cattle ( most have dual boot btw, that's what I've got, to get the best of both ) is right. The fact that most developers use Windows as their platform of choice ( that includes "serious" developers ) says volumes about Windows not being evil. Just a little annoying sometimes :D

Ah, thanks. Imho Windows is far more development friendly as linux or any other either... no need to bug with a million and one version, only one standard has to work.

A lazy developer should not teach me what to and not to... lol As for Windows being unstable, my Windows98SE and WindowsXP PCs froze three (read: 3) times in 6 months altogether. It's easy to install a system bad, not take care of it and then say "it's crap! it crashes!". A properly maintained Windows won't misbehave. :)
