Day 1 - would like a prebriefing

Post by dogzer »

I'm a blitz3d user. Wanted to move to something faster than blitz3d, so i started learning sdl (simple directmedia layer) and for that i had to learn c++.
But i didn´t got into sdl that much, so i didn´t leave blitz3d. But today a friend of mine told me to check irrlicht out because it looked pretty cool, and i got really intrigued!

I would like someone to tell me a short/quick overview of what I can, or can´t do with this engine. I'm both a 3d and 2d game artist, so i provide my own art for my games.
Can i sell my irrlitch games? Is irrlitch fast but hard to use, or maybe easy to use but slow? this is day 1 so anything you tell me would be good to know. Thank you in advance.

yes you can sell games made with irrlicht, depending on which other libs you use in your game. Irrlicht only provided graphics and some physics, things like sound and networking need to be added using other libs. Selling your work would depend on what other libs you use and what their licenses are.

In terms of speed irrlicht is not the fastest engine, but as i understand it not much optimisation has been done, so this could change.

Irrlicht is the easiest 3D engine i've found so far.

Hope this helps

that´s been a lot of help. Does this engine has an irc chat, or any other chat i can hang out at?

I'm going to give this engine a go, because i love making games.

IRC is at #irrlicht on irc.freenode.net.

Not many people go there though and it's quiet 75% of the time. If you need help, the best place to post is here.
Crud, how do I do this again?

yeah, but in my opinion they're really slow (easy though). I use Newton for physics (physicsengine.com)

How can I make animated models?
My .x exporter for 3ds max does not work really good, but MD2 and MS3D are worse file formats (especially MS3D)
Do you know a good exporter plugin that is available for download?
