Dynamically Changing Clothing

Post by GraphicHelp »

Hi Everyone,

Ok so I am using 3dsmax 9 and have created a character with animations. I have used the composite feature that allows me to have a base texture on my model and then as many other textures as I would like. I can attach a new 'shirt' texture over the skin that only covers the areas I want. I believe I get a similar effect to world of warcraft. This all works great in 3dsmax 9 but I have no idea how to export it into Irrlicht. So far exporting into .x using pandasoft or KW x either losses the textures or fails completely. Is there a way to retain multiple textures?

Also, I'm not a programmer but I am assuming that by labeling each texture layer_0, layer_1, layer_2 ... my programing friends could somehow assign the right texture with the correct name so the model can load.

I am open to new ideas with this same effect, your help is appreciated. As long as I don't have to attach a new model over the character for each piece of clothing.

Thanks again

Hi graphic help...

I think the best solution (as many games do) is render each shirt into a texture, and then changing the shirt model texture to color1, color2 etc(for example blue shirt 1.jpg, red shirt 1.jpg)

This means, that ur model has to be UV mapped really well. That way u can change the texture per set of clothing. this brings the problem of the pants as well. in order for dynamic ITEMS of clothing, will be more tricky. ie : each piece is separate and then grouped. a lot more work...

Ill look into it more , its a cool concetp.
