Makefiles

Post by SwitchCase »

If your using linux and like to do things the hard way... c++ programming with text editor and terminal rather than using a IDE or your writing an IDE then you might be interested in the following:

I understand that theres probably nobody that will find any use for this but Im just throwing it out there... I got bored one day and decided to get some programming done after a long break from it.

If you happen to try and snoop around the rest of the forum you may wonder where the rest of it is... it's not visible unless you register. :)

Cheers,
Chris.

If you're into fiddling with makefiles, then I'd recommend trying kjam. It's technically commercial, but you can download a demo or get full version for free just by asking. The documentation is dreadful, but the result are... wow.

From my own testing, it really is as fast as they say it is at compiling large projects. I was astonished to discover how much time was spent checking dependencies compared to actually compiling. On Windows, for example, it compiled my projects in half the time that it took nmake to do it from the command line, using exactly the same compiler, files and options, and outputting the same binary at the end. I haven't checked it against GNU make, but they claim it's relatively even faster, and I have no grounds for doubting that.
