Import playstation models

Post by KakashiXP »

my friend told me you could import PlayStation 1 and 2 models into a much used format like 3ds. is this true?

if so this would save me allot of time making my pyramid head model 8)
remember kids, you are what you eat :-)
and... look everybody, its hitler buddy!

I wasn't aware that PS1 and PS2 provided a standard model format. Apparently your "friend" knows more about it; perhaps he could provide the conversion tool?

No. Each playstation game uses it's own format to display meshes onscreen. There are, however, emulation tools & graphics memory capture applications that you can use to grab meshes while the game is running. This is a real hit-and-miss type capture. Results are usually bad.

Playstation 2 emulators are still terrible, and I doubt you could get your pyramid head mesh from it

You'd be best to google your pyramid head mesh, or make your own

There are PS specific model and texture formats which are setup nicely for use with the PS hardware but i don't know of any converters for them, but your best bet is just to google a PS format converter... have you even tried that? Seems like the first port of call!

Have you considered the legal implications of stealing the models from a published game?

I did not know that. Thanks for letting us know.

Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answer? ;)

Milkshape actually supports the PS format TMD. I don't know how often that format was used (or whether it's for PS1, PS2 or both and i'm not sure if there's one for PS3, i think collada is something they're trying to support rather than make up their own again possibly) and i imagine developers would often shun TMD and just use their own format or maybe base their format on TMD but add more stuff, resulting in a TMD loader not recognising it as standard.

Sony love to make their own formats... There's the TM2 image format for PS2 (PS1 had a similar one), GTF image format for PS3 (which you can only view by loading on a PS3...), PAM video format for PS3 (PS2 had a similar one as well) which is horrific to work with and the conversion tools just create really poor quality videos!

It's a common misconception, but she's actually not a lesbian in real life.
