What about a 3ds max / maya app built on Irrlicht?

Post by dingo_at_work »

I'm thinking of mucking around with the idea of a polygon creator built on Irrlicht - anyone else want to help create this?

1) yes for the knowledge of data structures required etc.

2) Because the only proper free modeller is Blender and it is not focused on games - more on production and broadcast - plus it has a wacky interface.

The only good ones are Maya and Max (and lightwave etc) and they cost a heap of money and when using them for games you use only a small subset of polygon functions. You don't need to pay for nurbs, fur etc when you just use it for polygon game models.

All I need is a cool name for it :)

I wouldn't focus so much on the name right now......

Milkshape 3D isn't bad, and it is..half free. Anyways, I highly doubt you can make anything even comparable to 3DS Max or Maya, when they have hundreds of developers who have been working on those projects for years...

But you are speaking only about modelling, or you also want accurate uv mapping and animation?

WINGS3d imho is the best modeller out there. I have worked at companies, and even stayed using Wings while they had Max, Maya..

Is Mirai's edgeloop style of modelling. Rather powerful. And way easier to learn than Blender.
But Wings only makes models.

www.wings3d.com

Since this one exists, I don't see a reason to code modelling tools. Wings3d is even bsd license open source and multi OS (Mac, linux, and windows.)

I have done loads of professional work quicker than my mates with max...
for organic modelling, imho is better than Max (Max with Meshtools, or max 6, perhaps is better..)

But only judging organic modelling. As for what the package is, Max, there's nothing that can compare in free/mid cost field.

max, maya, xsi, lw, are just to far from the other packages, and always will, I am afraid.

Milkshape...is WAY worse modeller (also) than Wings3d. It does not even let you model in the 3d view... It hasn't got very good shading. Its workflow is many times slower.

Still, it kick ass for weapon modelling, but I say, Wings is better.

In animation, Character Fx costing only 15$ , is much better than Milkshape animation features.

I prefer to have kickass tools in their areas than not so good do-it-all tools.

In companies, I used Max "only" for level buidling, rendering and character animation. While made the uvs in Ultimate Unwrap, and the modelling in Wings. And I am not the only one saying this...

Majority thinks Milkshape is best, but that's as they don't deeply know other tools.

And I know all the tools here spoken...as also I purchased Milskhape long ago.

Imho, is usefuil to build a level editor that can import already modelled and uv mapped models, scenery. Making it only do the entities export, collision areas (unless lod is used) lights position and lightmap generation. And export seamlessly to irrlicht..

That'd be already a huge task by its own...adding even then modelling features (that also is re inventing the wheel, being wings, metasequoia, blender free) would be an overkill fo rwhat is really needed for irrlicht...

Indeed, a perhaps better path would be making a python scrip to export everything possible direct to Irlicht...But know Blender has not all the fans it should among game engines people... :-S ;)
