Project Erie *The 24 Day game challenge* (Finished)

Post by wildrj »

Ok please don't kill me by just reading the title i have a good explanation ..trust me :) I made up my on Q&A session to help with explaining what this is. Any comments can be made on my blog or here.. Motivation, thoughts, rants, jokes etc. This is almost a exact copy of the post on the blog minus the tools used part. I didn't want to bore you with them. I will update my blog every day with progress and tragedy.

Blog at : http://www.wild.deathtouchstudios.com

Little update on myself I’m finally a senior :) and still working on I-Core. I’ve been accepted to the University of advancing technology in phoenix Arizona. I will be majoring in Software Engineering and Network Security with a minor in game programming. Now that that’s done let’s get to the reason your reading the 24 Day Game Challenge!!!

What is the 24 Day Game Challenge?

The 24 Day Game Challenge is almost exactly how the title says. I have to make a game in 24 days. Now I know the possibility of this is very slim. Games take tons of work and effort that most of my fellow game developers know. A small rundown for those not familiar with game programming goes as followed Graphics, audio, physics, entities, states, and ai. Now these are only some of the core components needed for a fully function game. Deadline for this challenge is august 24th it’s the end of summer and the start of my senior year in high school.

What made you take this challenge?

It was presented to me when a friend and I visited UAT has fly in geeks. There I met one of the software engineer professors. I had a simple problem with my code and asked for his help. After discussing various things including some programming techniques I foolishly promised him that I could deliver the game / demo before summer was up. Now at the time I didn’t think about how long was left in my summer. Only about 2 months and a third were left in my summer. So of course he chuckled and said ok he would take me on that bet. Now I didn’t realize at the time that he would be the one to teach me when I attend and a failure now would just be a very bad hit to my reputation has a programmer at that school. Now has of this post I am not sure if he still remembers this little promise I made but I’d still like to show that I can do it not only to him but to myself.

Why haven’t you started earlier?

Now most of you probably thinking this idiot had 2 months to work on it why not start after the UAT trip. Well in reality I’ve been working on this project since the UAT trip for 2 months I have been working on the framework (a.k.a Engine) to power the game. Now yes I know make games not engines but you have to understand for the game to be made I needed an easy to use entity manager and state manager among other things. So the framework was a necessity I’m not going to say I couldn’t use another engine out there as I could have but I also wanted the ability to say I made the engine that powered it. Knock out two birds with one stone have a nice engine and game to take to UAT.

What’s your current skill level?

I would like to think I’m an intermediate level programmer. But hey we all have our noob moments just ask anyone who is on the Irrlicht irc channel. I’ve only been programming in c++ for about 2 years so I have an ok grasp on it.

What’s the game?

The game that is going to be produce is a First Person Horror game called Project Erie me and invasion came up with the original idea last summer I’ve just now had the ambition to create it. I won’t say much about the game because I feel my design doc covers it pretty well below is the original vision for the game.
You are a patient in the Erie psychiatric penitentiary who suffers from hallucinations. One night you hear a loud crash outside of your room. Sudden the light flickers and you see a shadowy figure run through your room’s door and a small click of the lock follows. You approach your front door and open it only to be welcomed by a small hallway leading away from your room. The walls are covered in blood the lights flicker has you continue down the hall way. Halfway down the hallway all lights suddenly shut off. You hear a whisper in your right ear saying “Pssst Here” you then see a flickering beam of a flashlight roll out. You pick it up has you reach for it you turn your head to the right and notice a small silhouette run down a second hallway. You follow going down the same hall way you hear a heartbeat increasing slowly. You notice your sanity meter slowly rising. Something falls in the distance you approach it and your heartbeat and sanity meter keeps rising. Your flashlight shines upon a closed door you slowly creep the door open…
Please go easy on the idea it was a while back haha.

Do you plan to finish it?

I hope by day 24 I will have a playable demo. Maybe not a full game but at least a hour worth of game play.

Who’s on the team?

I’m doing all the programming for this game alone. I will however accept any 3d models that anyone offers and I will use them if they fit the theme accordingly. Theme is in a insane asylum from 1800’s to 1900’s for any models donated it would be nice if they were uv-mapped. Uv mapping takes time lots of time.

What do you get out of it?

Well aside from a nice framework and a game to show from this challenge I also get at least the confidence in myself to know I can actually do this for a living. Think of it has a way of finding out if this is what I can do.

Why post this on the internet for the world to see what if you fail?

I’m posting in all honesty to convince others not to try this at all! Ok not really maybe for some added support and motivation or maybe I just like public humiliation. Even if i fail at least i made the attempt to full fill my promise even if the professor doesn’t remember me haha. Anything i have will be released for others to view, use, make fun of etc.

Side Comments?

I would think may god have mercy on my soul sums up my side comments.

Due Date?

Like i said before the game is to be completed on august 24th or rather released on the 24th. With the game i will be releasing the framework separately with a series of tutorials explaining how to use the framework for ones own games.

your project sounds possible, since you already have a framework ready but i'm not sure if could help you out as i have my own stuff to be busy of.

It souds incredibly challenging. However, it does sound POSSIBLE contrarelly to some other stuff and considering what deadlines do to good coder, you just might pull it off. So my best wishes and I hope you do finish it in time.

P.S.: If the "sanity meter" raises when things go "bunk" in the night, shouldn't it be an insanity meter? If you want to keep the name, how about it drop?

I agree, this does sound really challenging. But I've talked to you extensively in the IRC channel, and have gotten to watch your progress real-time; it appears as though you could complete this, possibly.

I hope you finish this too, because I would really like to play this game. If you don't finish it within the deadline, will you work with it after?

Yes of course i will be working on it after the time limit regardless if i complete the challenge or not.

Dorth: Yes the more your sanity meter goes up the more "bunk" things will go in the night.. i called it a sanity meter for the sake of saving two characters of typing in my programs :X

Anyone who was in irc tonight knows of the huge hit to the gut my framework took when trying to apply physics to entities in a dynamic way.

More on this in the blog.

EDIT!: For anyone who read the problem in the blog i got a little update thanks to me talking till wee hours of the night i got to speak with Yoran and after about 2 minutes we found the problem... Scale = 0.0,0.0,0.0 a.k.a multiplying by zero made physx go WTF!.. anyways now im really off to bed peace.

The design doc sounds like fun! Hopefully you finish it. (And maybe there will be a low graphics version for lowend hardware aswell? otherwise it'd probably need to grab a pixel shader capable PC to test it - and I surely want to do when it's out! :))

There can never be enough scary 1st person games IMHO :P

Did you do the chair wildrj? It looks good, in fact, I like the room so far. I can't wait until you get more added.

I think you have to watch your "sanity meter" when working late on this project at 3 am to get it finished within the deadline :P

Why do I get confused with bitplane so much! I know our usernames start with the same letter but still, nobody confuses hybrid with halifax for instance.
