This is a laser scanner based on a line laser pointer and a webcam, and it seems to get some pretty decent results
Since I have all the required hardware to build this I think I'm going to give this a try

I made that exact same thing a few years ago (it's still sitting in my closet). I never got very good results though.

Brilliant! Thanks for reminding me on trying this.
I have some grossly accurate(1rph ) old telescope drive motors here, will turn those into a Laser Scanner for super smooth line movement.
At 30FPS that's 108'000Frames

It's very similar to the Kinect, if I assume they use parallax to compute depth. Otherwise, it reminds me of Photomodeller, and I don't know why they would need a laser. Ah, yes I do. PM requires *you* to identify corresponding points.

Yeah, I just met the DAVID laserscanner guys on a trade fair. Their whole system (full commercial software version, webcam and laser line pointer) is just 300€. But I didn't test their software so far, I'll try soon though. Just got my laser sent
