Features of Irrlicht

Post by Gerail »

Hi,

my company is planning a new project for 3D Visualization. Now we are looking for a 3D Engine that can be used for the rendering of the scences.

Some geographic data should be visualized thus it would be nice if the engine can support the transformation of different geographic coordinate systems. But nevertheless it should be clear that this feature is not needed for a game engine.

An important point is the fact, that the engine can be used in a browser using a plugin. According to this the data should be fetched from a web server or database using some sort of dynamic loading or streaming. If it is possible to fetch some files from the web it shoudl be possible to encrypt the data. Furthermore the received data should be cached to reduce the traffic.

The embedding of images, sounds and videos into the scene would be nice. Especially for videos the supported formats are important.

It would be nice if you can tell me whether some of the demands are supported by the engine.

Thanks and best regards
Christian

Irrlicht is not directly usable as a browser plugin I'm sorry to say, and I haven't seen any recent attempts to do so (although I might be mistaken)

Video playback is also not provided out of the box, but I'm sure there are user-created projects out there which can give you this support, or you could easily write this yourself

But in the end if you're looking for an out of the box solution for your project, then maybe irrlicht is not for you
In itself it provides a very decent basic but very extensible solution for rendering, but you'll have to invest some time and work to get the most out of it

There isn't really any 3d engine out there which has a browser plugin commonly enough installed by people that it makes much sense (I suspect Unity might lead there at the moment, but I suppose still less 1% of people have it installed). I think a better solution when coding 3D for the web is using something like the CopperCube engine from Ambiera (or a similar 3d engine).

Gerail, have you considered Questviewer?

I believe that there is a version that can do most if not all of what you want. But (and this is the big downside), it is a very long way from being free!

Thanks for the hints. I'll habe a look at CooperCube and Quest3D.
