Rooting NOOK touch, can't decide...

I got a NOOK touch for Christmas, and I want to root it so that I can install Opera web browser (the hidden browser really sucks). And also a few other apps. The thing is, I know it voids the warranty if you do that. If I unroot it later, is it distinguishable from a regular brand new one?

I also heard you can install another OS on a Micro SD card and put it into the NOOK Touch to run apps without rooting. Anyone heard of that?

Yeah I know the Nook color can be hacked to run Ubuntu Linux and MeeGo Linux but about the Nook Touch, I'm not sure.
