running examples does not work (Linux)

i am very new to irrlicht and am trying to run the exaples but when i compile them it all ways complains that i am missing a file like -irrlicht or that something was not declared in the scope and i am very comfused as i have only just downloaded it and trying to run the examples i have not modified any code or directorys i am running the newest version of ubuntu i was wondering if there are librarys i am missing or if there is some out of the box set up i have to do that is not talked about on the downloads page or other ways not as ovious thank you.
