Retrieving a Mesh

Hi,
Does anyone know of a good way to get the pointer to a mesh AFTER it's been put into the IMeshSceneNode or IAnimatedMeshSceneNode? I have things I would like to do to manipulate the mesh, like change vertex alphas, but it seems like you have to reload the whole scene from file, or keep the original mesh pointer around after loading.

IAnimatedSceneNode->getMesh(0);
returns the first mesh in the node.
or should.
