CHEAP video cards

Howdy.

I've never bought video cards before, and there are a few under 40$ on NewEgg.com. Knowing nothing about video cards, I was wondering if anyone could reccommend / not reccommend the cards. Now I know they say "not for gamers..." but I'm on a (very tight) budget, and I want to get a card that I can use right now. My current card is Craptacular(tm). Let's just say 5 college students with dull pencils could out perform my video card!

So any suggestions would be appreciated!

I dont want to start a flame war but Nvidia is the way to go, I think you can pick up a old geforce 2 MX for about $39

OK, stupid question...

Can I use a x4 or x8 card in a x2 port?

Also... there are many cards that are, like "Sapphire ATI" cards. What is the difference between a "Sapphire ATI" card and an "ATI ATI" card?

Finally... How do I compare card performance?

Sapphire produces ATI's Lowcost alternatives. Sapphires tend to have cheaper cooling solutions than the "name brand" ATI cards. In other terms Sapphire's are for the cost conscious while the ATI cards are for brand conscious people.
