We all know that Niko is doing a great and 100% voluntary job in his FREE time and we do respect that, and no one can ask him to work more, but I would like to know how the things will work in future.

Well its 0.8 now, and for me it took Niko 4 months to do the next installment, maybe the same amount of time to get to 0.9...

It also depends I think on how much time Niko can spend developing...

It was rumoured as well as soon as it got to 1.0 it would become CVS, but I don't think is going to happen is it Niko?? Since IrrlichtNX++ is available for CVS development...

Edit: Get rid of me being a muppet...

What do you expect from version 1.0? It won't magically change into something different. So far each version was += 0.1 . I guess version 1.0 will be not so much different. Sure, it's gonne still be some kind of special. Like a birthday, where you're one year older, but, did you really change into something different? Maybe in your mind. :)

These are just my guesses. It's still possible that Niko will do something surprising with 1.0 . But it might still have bugs and issues.. ;)

edit: Well, normaly a major version change happens when a product reaches a certain level (of completeness or stability etc.) or other major changes were applied to it and not when a certain amount of releases happened (like it seems to happen with irrlicht). BUT, Niko might have planned and coordinated his development that right this will be the case with 1.0. Dunno :)

another edit: maybe after 0.9 Niko will continue with 0.9.1, 0.9.2, etc.

I apologise, the website is correct Niko, I need to engage brain a little more...

If you take a look at http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/development.html, you'll see that there are not that much features missing. I think 1.0 until Jan 2006 could be achieve without a problem. But it won't contain very special features, the only difference will be that the 1.0 realease should be tested and bugfixed more than any other release, including some release candidates etc.
Hehe, and yes, 0.10 does not sound as cool as 0.8 or 0.9 does. Maybe we should go on with 0.91, 0.92 etc after that.. Just some marketing thoughts. :)

Or adding a '9' every release. 0.9, 0.99, 0.999, 0.9999. In this way we will really converge against 1.0 :)

It's gonna be hard to distinguish 0.99999999999999 from 0.9999999999999... :)

despite us all knowing better, somehow in the eyes of a lot of people out there having a 1.0 release (bug-free & fully-featured or not...) is some sort of "coming of age" for an OSS project. Gives us legitimacy. Perhaps could help to catch the eye of more commercial developers who want to take advantage of Irrlicht's nice Zlib license to make use of it commercially.
This Might seem silly given my present stage of developement, but it has always been my intent to one day fork Fnord into a commercial engine. Some day I actually would like to be able to work on this stuff full-time and make a living off it if possible. Unlikely maybe, but a nice thought :-)
My irrlicht-based projects have gone underground for now, but if you want, check out my webcomic instead! http://brokenboomerang.net

Nah.. people always think of versions as going up. I like to think of them like a rocket countdown.

Let's start subratcting.

0.3
0.2
0.1
0.0 - BLASTOFF!
Crud, how do I do this again?
