MY HEAD ASSPLODID!!!

Sorry, I am completely unable to fathom the thinking here. What is it about gifs that would allow you reduce 502 textures down to 35?

The textures themselves would still exist. My thought was that I would be able to load a single gif rather than 360 pngs. Kind of like what ...

So it is. I admit, I don't really care about the loading speed anymore. It's not really all that bad. It's the possibility of there being a better way that intrigues me now.

I suppose I'm being unclear myself.

I really would rather stick with png's. The reason why I was considering gifs is because I believe the reason for why it took so long for my program to load, which ranges between 5 and 7 seconds, is because of the vast number of times that I load textures. This ...

Incidentally I am referring to both. One set of images is applied to a sphere in such a manner that the mesh looks as though it is appearing in segments of consistent latitude. The other set forms the illusion of a circle being drawn in segments of consistent theta. As to your other question, at the ...

The primary obstacle in using gifs is that Irrlicht does not support them. (so I think, if I'm wrong please disillusion me)

Also, does anyone know how to go about doing this coordinate manipulation? The forums, API, and just fooling around in the editor have shown to be rather vague on the subject.

Texture Loading Speed

In one project I'm working on I load about 500 textures in all. Most of them are just parts of various animations I have, and so for a while I thought to combine them into gifs and just be done with it. Of course after poking around the forums I now know that just ain't gonna happen.

So, is there ...

Thanks for the input guys. At this point it may be difficult to effectively implement the LOD idea, but I think its definitely worth a try. It seems reasonable to expect the user to suffer some lag if they try to view their entire army up close.

Each sphere contains exactly 200 triangles, which, although it isn't quite as much as 1024, is still probably a hefty load for a graphics card as weak as mine. I've also tested all of the available options, and so far it seems like Direct3D9 works best.

Is my search for answers fruitless? Is there ...

Well to be honest, I'm using Irrlicht.NET. I don't know how badly that will decrease the performance... Also no. The lag persists whether I check for collisions or not.

Simply too many meshes...

OK, I accept that there will come a point at which my computer just can't render as fast as I want it to, but surely it can handle rendering 256 spheres?! When I put in that many I end up dropping down to about 15 fps. I have more faith in Irrlicht(and my computer) than that...

Is there any ...

I hereby award thee with 18 levels of awesomeness. Translating over took a little while, but it works perfectly now. Thanks!

AccessViolationException strikes again! (C#)

I just started playing around with irrlicht a few days ago, and so now I am trying to make a simple underwater scene. Unfortunately my code has spontaneously decided that every file I have is protected, and now goes through a cycle of throwing AccessViolationExceptions. That too confuses me. Its a ...
