Re: Face's material detection based on raycasting...
Good question. I have yet to find a good solution to this problem. I'm looking forward to hearing some ideas.
@mongoose7: That solution would only work for basic games/tech demos. What if you are not using a heightfield at all? Or multi-story buildings?

Re: Definition of game developer/designer/programmer
I think developer is just a general term that covers all aspects of making a game (programming, art, design, etc). Designer can be used as a general term, but I'd rather be called a developer. Programmer usually just means coding, although a programmer can be a developer or designer.

Re: which ani model format works best?
I don't know if there is a "most supported" animated format. They are all about the same quality. You should choose format based on what you can easily export to. Keep in mind that only .x, .b3d, and .ms3d support skeletal animation (.md2 and .md3 support morph target animation).

I made that exact same thing a few years ago (it's still sitting in my closet). I never got very good results though.

Since you are new to 3d I recommend you download one of the many free 3d modeling programs (even if you have no art ability). Messing around in them can get you familiar with many 3d concepts.

I smell a kid who has little to no programming, modelling, or game design experience who wants to make an mmo, minecraft clone, or some giant combined engine  , and will give up in a few weeks when he realizes how hard it is. maybe i or someone should make a modeler, i had an idea for a ...
