I have checked out Panda3D and it seems real nice! But I am wondering whether I can integrate the python scripting with e.g. a Java application? Ouch! Probably only if you used the Panda3D C/C++ API and created a Java binding ... In that case, if Java is part of the requirements, I'd look seriously...

Not to detract from Irrlicht, but you might take a look at Panda3D: http://www.panda3d.org/ which is scripted through Python. It's free as well, developed by Carnegie Mellon University and used by Disney.

Have you tried IrrLua? Yes, I looked at it a bit. However, using IrrLua is not quite what I wanted to do. Using IrrLua, I still ended up typing a lot of the actual Irrlicht commands and parameters...
