Re: Use Irrlicht for a non-interactive, machinima-like 3d ap

I have checked out Panda3D and it seems real nice! But I am wondering whether I can integrate the python scripting with e.g. a Java application? Ouch! Probably only if you used the Panda3D C/C++ API and created a Java binding ... In that case, if Java is part of the requirements, I'd look seriously...

Not to detract from Irrlicht, but you might take a look at Panda3D: http://www.panda3d.org/ which is scripted through Python. It's free as well, developed by Carnegie Mellon University and used by Disney.

Cheers.

That's a genuinely good idea. A whiteboard and some marker pens would also be a good investment. Almost every coding project I do starts out this exact way. I start looking at the project from a very high level and then drill down into areas where I think I may need to do extra work. I will look at...

...so I wont have to recreate my engine every time I encounter something useful that I should have thought about before I began it all. Actually, your a novice programmer... You ask a lot of rudimentary questions, hardly ready to design a game engine IMO... Instead of "building an engine"...

I wouldn't worry about it too much... Just go with what is there and you'll develop your own "style" in time... Design patterns are like opinions, everybody has one, and each think it's the "best" going... BTW you might consider losing the tagline... it's worn out and it's...

I came thinking someone had built a Hex Editor in Irrlicht code...

If you do choose Lua specifically, I recommend tolua++ for C++ bindings. It has a few quirks but it works quite well and is simple to use.
Thx zenaku 8)

We're starting to look at LUA pretty seriously and tolua++ will figure prominently in the implementation...

Have you tried IrrLua? Yes, I looked at it a bit. However, using IrrLua is not quite what I wanted to do. Using IrrLua, I still ended up typing a lot of the actual Irrlicht commands and parameters... I didn't see any great benefit as it was a small step to just program the application in Irrlicht a...
