how fast is irrlitch

Post by dogzer »

hey, i've been using blitz3d but i really want to use something a bit faster.

I'm not a speed freak or anything, just thought that if irrlitch was faster i should use it from now on, although its really hard to leave blitz3d haha.

If anyone knows blitz3d and irrlitch, could you tell me if its faster?
I could stay with blitz3d and make the game really efficient, but i rather make it really efficient with irrlitch, you know what i mean? But first i would like to know if irrlitch is actually fast.

I think Irrlicht is much faster than Blitz3D, but it's not the fastest engine available.
But it's very easy in use.

I have exported one level from Ca3DE engine to quake 3 format and got a very good results with Irrlicht.
I can to say, that Irrlicht is faster, than many other engines.

Carsten's 3d engine, another very cool engine that already includes dynamic -per pixel lighting, bump map, and it's constantly changing:

btw, ehhmm, ehhhmmm, I help Carsten out every now and then; there are many artists and programmers who help and support Carsten's work. check it in the thanks page:

the 2nd name, Alvaro F. Celis.....that's me!!!! I created the loading logo!!! and help out with other things.

It's also a very beautiful engine and a dedicated work.

cheers!

btw:

There's an interesting tutorial I wrote on how to use Gmax for level editing and exporting to a .map compatible with Ca3de, and also Quake3 (Using Game Level Builder addon).

Someone might find it useful:

yep, it's very focused on online deathmatching.

and yep , it's very good.

and yep, it's not free, it's commercial. But it's free for non-commercial use and you get the code to compile your dll. The only drawback (at least for me) is that it uses OpenWatcom as its c++ compiler and it's completely dos based. I know, I know, perhaps it's every programmer's perfect environment and dream come true to develop under these circumstances but I'm very used to windows compilers.

ok

gotta hit the sack

both are fast. The previous version of Ca3de was as fast as Irrlight (when it just used lightmaps), but the latest version has suffered a small drop down in FPS because of the new rendering techiques used, but everything is being worked on. Carsten is even working on a new global illumination system called "spherical harmonic ligthing", but that's for next releases.

Ogre (also open source) is supposed to befaster than Irrlicht, but a simply moving around in a bsp seemed way slower, so I decided to just stick with Irrlicht. One big slow point in Irrlicht to be aware of though, is shadows. Really make your framerate crawl
