a free Windows version?

bah! when have you ever known m$ to give anything away for free!
Use linux if you want a free os, Mandrake and Slackware are free, easy to install and easy to use, and irrlicht does work on them.
PS, if you want to use windows software on linux then use a windows emmulator such as WINE http://www.winehq.com/
