Which 3d modeller do you use? (just linux)

Post by Sid »

Hi,
which linux 3d modeller do you use? I tried blender (i dont like it), and wings 3d, which is really good for small objects, but not for levels, etc.

thanks,
Sid

I suggest you should continue trying Blender. Once you get the hang of it it's really uber and blows the other free modellers away (imo, because I know vermeer is going to blabla half a page again about some details concerning modelling in Blender :P)

hehe..nope.

but I'm modelling a really complex level for a game prototype of a very friend of mine....all in wings.

No page thread needed ;)

no smooth groups or real edgeloops or n-gons in Blender. No vector operations.

Though, both are perfectly capable, knowing em in depth.
short, ain't it :P
Finally making games again!

wow, it was! Where did all the rest of words go? lol!

well, since I'm just starting to play around with linux so far Blender seems to be the tool that offers me the most for free; but a very good modeler with great import-export capabilities is ac3d http://www.ac3d.org it runs both in win and linux and it's very intuitive to use. Besides, ac files are natively supported by blender (import).

and finally, I also play around with equinox-3d which seems to have a bright future. It's pretty softimage-like; http://www.equinox3d.com/
it's shareware, if you want to use it commercialy you gotta send Gabor Nagy (creator) US$30. Not bad for suc a good package huh?

right now I'm downloading wings. I like its interface.

here ar some shots:
ac3d5- loading one of the sample models:(dragon)

dragon model imported into blender from ac3d format:

equinox3d: one of its sample models loaded:

final remarks: ac3d uses povary to render while equinox has got its own raytracer; and equinox now exports to "collada" xml, free opensource 3d format.

If you figure out how to texture with it, let me know.
If it exists in the real world, it can be created in 3d

Sys specs:
AMD 3700+ 64 processor
1.0 gb ram
e-Geforce 6600 graphics 256 mb onboard ram

I know that you are talking only about modelers running on Linux, but I can't resist to mention best modeler in the universe:

Metasequoia 3D

http://www21.ocn.ne.jp/~mizno/main_e.html

Shareware version can't export, but Free LE version can do that. In another words, you can use shareware version, save data in custom format, reload data in LE version and export to .X or 3DS.

How can somebody know that you are using metasequoia for your project?

Author is saying that he can't sell his product outside of Japan. Why this would stop me using metasequoia? I would like to pay, but if author can't find way to get my money, that's not my problem. I'm sure that this will not stop me using such wonderful software.

I have to say I didnt like blender at all *at first* but once in collegue (aka with a nice broadband connection and not the crappy 56k @ home) I downloaded all of the tutorials listed on its website, plus the training videos, and I must say its really impressive what you can do with it, so, the effort (aka hi-learning curve) is worth the try. Specially since my interest is videogames (and I expect 99.9% people in these forums is), I dunno care about other commercial modellers advanced features so far, nor the renders and all that, since likely its all handled with the 3d engine.

Also, as they say, an image is worth a 1000 words, Im going to try ac3d and equinox, by looking at afecelis screenies.

that is said bout le version, not the share...ultimate unwrap opens the metasequoia mqo format ;)

and there's a free max i/o plugin...

Yet though , I jumped to Wings3d wagon, as prefered its license, and pretty happy I did.wings is also compiled in linux and Mac...

UV can be made in wings...
By no means is of the quality of Lithunwrap(except the auto stuff), or what t o say of Ultimate Unwrap, but is workable.

personally i uv map all with ultimate, i like more than max uv editor, even.

My workflow was pretty smooth in mods with metasequoia, lith(all the uv stuff with that free jewell), gimp for windows.Look, metasequoia modelled(2,600 tris character, c. eastwood inspired...):
