I'm not Game Manic
Yes. Xbox games run off of a modified DirectX engine. So you build them and then use a FTP program to transfer your game to the Xbox's HDD. I think you have to install a Mod chip to access the HDD, though.by the way just out of curosity, are xbox games programmed from directx then transfered over to the xbox
depends where you live... here in the UK we're free from the DMCA and I think its legal so long as
1) I don't download/buy a hacked Microsoft BIOS, ie) I patch it myself, or use a legal BIOS that contains no Microsoft code
2) I don't pirate Microsoft's XDK or any of their software (hence the need for OpenXDK)
In America it's probably a federal offense punishable by death to posess a security screwdriver capable of opening the box

The EU Copyright Directive which makes it illegal to circumvent copy protection systems on hardware would make both 1 and 2 illegal. The only legal way I think you can mod the Xbox is to change out the entire motherboard of the Xbox and thus it would no longer be an Xbox.bitplane wrote:depends where you live... here in the UK we're free from the DMCA and I think its legal so long as

re: circumvention
maybe selling a cromwell modchip in the uk would be an offense ('primarily' adapted to facilitate circumvention, sounds grey to me), but buying or importing one for home use shouldn't be. edit: unless there's something i missed in the software sectioneucd uk implementation wrote:296ZB. any device, product or component which is primarily designed, produced, or adapted for the purpose of enabling or facilitating the circumvention of effective technological measures.
So actually... it's still illegal to use the OpenXDK where you live. Becuase in order for the xbox to allow FTP transfers to it's HDD, you must install a Modchip which contains hacked BIOS. That's what one of my friends had to do anyway. He's a Halo 2 modder (but he doesn't play on Xbox Live, so don't worry about reporting him to Bungie...) and has to use FTP in order to edit the Halo 2 map files.1) I don't download/buy a hacked Microsoft BIOS
no, first you don't *need* a hacked bios, you can boot to linux with a perfectly legal cromwell bios. owning a hacked bios isn't illegal. selling or distributing one is a copyright violation and an offence under the EUCD. however, if I copied microsoft's code (ok I dunno how) from my own console and patched it myself, then wrote it to a modchip, all for my own personal use - its perfectly legal.cypher543 wrote: So actually... it's still illegal to use the OpenXDK where you live. I must have been mis-informed then. I read in a modding tutorial that you do need a hacked BIOS, otherwise the Xbox won't let you run a game from the HDD, which is what you have to do when modding a game like Halo 2 or something, since the Xbox doesn't have a DVD writer.no, first you don't *need* a hacked bios
